Along with medical treatment consisting of oral tablets and topical lotions based on extent of hair loss sometimes mesotherapy, platelet rich plasma therapy are also used in conjunction. Hair transplantation is advised when there seems to be no option of regrowth with these options.

What is hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is an out patient procedure where hair follicles are removed from back end of scalp and put in areas where there is balding usually in the sides and front of scalp. This is known as follicular unit extraction.

How do I know I need hair transplantation?

If there is baldness of scalp and there is no regrowth of hair after medical management, PRP or mesotherapy.

Hair transplantation is indicated in:

• Androgenetic alopecia in males and females.
• Cicatricial alopecia due to skin conditions like DLE, LP
• Scarring alopecia due to burns or accidents
• To restore the frontal hairline.

Is hair transplantation painful?

Hair transplantation is done under local anesthesia. It takes anywhere between 8-12 hours for the procedure depending on the number of follicles to be transplanted. If more number of follicles need to be transplanted it is done in 2 sessions.

How do I know how many grafts I might need?

The number of grafts depends on the amount of balding and the amount of scalp you need to cover. Usually in 1sqcm around 30-40 hair follicles need to be put to give good density of hair.

What should I expect after hair transplantation procedure?

After the procedure , small scabs will be formed at the donor and recipient area. These scabs fall of within a day or two. Sometimes water compresses are told to be put in these areas for the scabs to come off easily. Occasionally there is swelling on the forehead for which medications are prescribed and it goes away in 2-3 days.

After the scabs fall off, the hair which have been transplanted fall off in 2-4 months. New hair starts to grow after they fall off. During this time PRP sessions are recommended so that the hair roots get stronger. It takes around a year for the transplanted hair to grow.

Can I go to office after the procedure?

We do not suggest joining immediately after the procedure. You can start office 2 days after the procedure. Best to do it before a long weekend.

Do I need to continue using lotions even after hair transplantation?
Yes. You need to continue applying lotions lifelong.
